In automated liquid handling systems, labware such as racks and plates often have varying heights. For example, a rack for 50 mL tubes may stand at 90-100 mm, while a 96-well plate might be only 15-20 mm tall. When these differently sized items are placed side by side, the taller racks can obstruct the movement of pipettors or grippers. This obstruction can make it impossible to run a protocol, requiring the racks to be rearranged and the robot to be reprogrammed.

By elevating shorter racks and plates to match the height of taller ones, these spacers standardize the working surface across your automated system.
