Cold block for 15 mL tubes, SBS footprint, 15 positions (5×3)
[cat. No. 1073]
Cold block for 15 mL conical centrifuge tubes (Falcon-type) with an SBS/SLAS footprint for automation compatibility. Holds 15 tubes in a 5×3 configuration.
Pre-chill the cold block in a freezer or on ice and use it instead of an ice bucket for experiments that require low temperatures. The substantial aluminum mass provides excellent thermal inertia — once chilled, the block keeps tubes cold significantly longer than smaller alternatives or ice buckets, with uniform temperature across all 15 positions.
The wells are precision-machined with a conical profile that matches standard 15 mL centrifuge tubes, maximizing the contact area between the tube wall and the aluminum for efficient heat transfer.
Due to the block's solid aluminum construction, it has considerable weight. The sides feature a textured hand-grip area for easy and secure handling, even when wet or cold.
The cold block has an SBS footprint and will fit any pipetting robot that follows the "Society for Biomolecular Screening" standard. This standard is also known as SLAS/ANSI form factor.
The block's substantial weight also makes it surprisingly versatile beyond thermal management. It can serve as a premium-grade paperweight, a conversation starter, or a reliable stress-relief device after a long day of unsuccessful experiments. Some researchers have also noted that its solid construction provides a reassuring sense of security when working late nights in the lab.
